Question: What is a really good place to go on a hiking and camping trip for several days in Texas?
My buddies and I want to go on a backpacking trip for 4-5 days and rough it. We live in central texas and are willing to drive a little if need be. Near a lake would be great if we want to go swimming but we are looking somewhere with alot of secluded trails with great scenery and challenging hiking

Answer:

Answer by lestermount
Challenging hiking with secluded trails would be in Big Bend.
Something less remote would be East Texas in Tyler state park or farther South in one of the National Forests.

Question: What is some good food to take on a hiking trip?
I am going on a hiking trip on the Pacific Crest Trail and I am not sure what kind of food to take. I don’t have a bear proof can or bear proof bags. I am looking for food that bears will not be able to smell. I am not sure if bears can smell canned food like Chili or Chicken Noodle Soup. If you know what kind of food fits what I am asking please answer. Thanks.

Answer by bluepenguin
Don’t risk it! My advice to you is to buy bear proof bags, your life is worth that investment. When you are on your trip make sure to hang the bags of food on a tree branch a good 5-10 yards away from where you are sleeping so, for one the mice and other small rodents can’t get into it and also if the bears happen to come by they won’t have a reason to be poking around where you are sleeping.

Freeze-dried foods. If you go to a local outdoor/backpacking kind of store (Outdoor Gear Exchange,or Eastern Mountain Sports) the usually have racks of freeze-dried camping foods where you just add hot water and viola! you have chili or some other kind of soup, etc.

Instant stuff:
Instant oatmeal, instant coffee, instant hot chocolate, cup-a-soup, all of this things are real light (just little packets) and really quick and easy to make in the morning or when your really hungry and want food quick.

Energy bars:
Power bars, Cliff bars and any other bar that is in that aisle at the grocery store is great as a quick energy booster on a long hike, or a snack before you reach camp.

Drink Powder;
there are so many different kinds it doesn’t matter what you get, just get something along the lines of gatorade powder, that you can pour in your water bottle on those days when its really hot, your breaking out a sweat and you really need to replenish all of those lost sodium, sugar…etc.

Question: What would you do in a camping trip if this happened?
As an avid camper/backpacker, you enjoy hiking into dense forest and setting up a crude camp. The camping trip is for 2 weeks and so you will need a stack of firewood. But by doing this, you are encouraging snakes to come live close by. What can you do to keep snakes away from your camp?

Answer:

Answer by hh60jayhawk
It would depend on where you are, as well as the time of year. In some places there are few to no snakes. In others, there are many snakes. I would say keep some Kindling nearby, and some larger stuff a little farther away. Also, a nice fire may just keep the snakes away. Personally, I don’t have much snake experience, mainly because of the places and time of year I camp, but that is probably what I would do.
