Question: What big brand shoe manufacturers make leather free footwear for hiking?
I know this isn’t a food question but I thought a vegetarian or vegan could help. I don’t care for leather and was wondering what big brand companies (e.g. Columbia, Keen, Timberland), make leather free footwear that is suitable for hiking?

My daughter finds DSW, Payless & a few others carrying leather free products. I’m sorry I think you need to go on line or call the companies of those you listed.
Question: Which hiking shoe is best when one must swim and cross streams as well as go over rocky areas?
I will be hiking in Maui, and some of the hikes involve walking across or through streams, and swimming to get to the next part of the trail. I don’t want to switch shoes out, because it would be a hassle to keep one pair of shoes dry. I feel comfortable spending around $ 100 if needed, because I don’t want any blisters or sore feet while on vacation! Can you recommend a shoe for me?

It almost depends on what area of the country you are living/hiking in. For wet areas I recommend leather boots with Gore-tex. I hike daily for my job as a forester and boots are the most important things I own. I am a big fan of the brand Vasque, but also like Merril and Montrail. You need comfort, support, and traction. I recommend going to an outdoors store and trying on a few pairs to get the right sizing and to find a model that feels the best to you. Then if you’d like find them online, sometimes they can be found cheaper. Just for your information the best hiking sandal I have found is Chaco. I am completely in love with them.
Question: What is the best type of shoe to wear while hiking in the Grand Canyon and other parks nearby?
My girlfriend and I are going to the Grand Canyon but we’ll also be going to Zion and Bryce. The hiking will only be a few miles at a time, none of this half day or all day stuff.

for running, you don’t want a chunky shoe that you would need for hiking.you want a lightweight, fitting shoe. for hiking, you want a comfortable, protective boot.
